<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A new project in Eastbourne is looking to recruit volunteers
to help local residents who are having problems with neighbourhood noise.
Developed by community mediation service <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a> in conjunction with
<a href="http://www.eastbourne.gov.uk/residents/" target="_blank">Eastbourne Borough Council</a> and <a href="http://www.eastbournehomes.org.uk/" target="_blank">Eastbourne Homes</a>, the new ‘Community Resolution
Assessors’ will visit members of your local community who are experiencing low
level anti-social behaviour - especially around environmental noise – in the
Eastbourne Borough Council area, to help them understand the issues that they
are experiencing and explore options for them to find a resolution.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Volunteers will go through a specially designed<a href="http://www.ocnlondon.org.uk/" target="_blank"> Open CollegeNetwork</a> accredited<a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/training/" target="_blank"> training course</a> delivered by Mediation Plus to provide the
skills assessors will need to deliver this service to the local community. The
training will equip all the participants with an understanding of how conflict
situations can arise, the different avenues available to resolve these issues
and when a case is appropriate to be referred to mediation. These are
transferable skills which will support the participants in other roles within
their lives.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once trained and accredited, assessors will meet with local
residents who have been referred to the new service up to three times, and will
receive on-going support from the Mediation Plus team in developing their new
roles. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mediation Plus <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/management/" target="_blank">Service Manager</a> Clive Gross said “This is the culmination
of over a years’ work with the Borough Council and Eastbourne Homes to develop
this new service and we are delighted to now be ready to train our first group
of volunteers. Similar projects training volunteer community assessors to help
local residents resolve anti-social behaviour issues have been run very
successfully by other community mediation services – such as New Forest
Mediation in Southampton – and we hope this new development for Eastbourne will
prove equally successful.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Presenting her report to the meeting, <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/trustees/" target="_blank">Chair of Trustees</a> Barbara Molog said “This has been a successful year thanks to the dedication and continuing commitment of our office team, my fellow Trustees and our volunteer mediators who deliver our services all-year-round across Eastbourne, Wealden and Lewes. We all work closely to identify and develop new opportunities that support the principles and objectives that underpin the charity - such as the development of our new workplace mediation service – and helps make us more financially resilient.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/management/" target="_blank">Service Manager</a> Clive Gross added “When I joined Mediation Plus in 2011 at a point our service was suspended and with only a small reserve in our bank account to try to put in place a rescue plan, the prospect of presenting an annual report some four years later showing the service in such a positive position would have seemed unreal. We have achieved this by being able to adapt to changing circumstances, develop new services, build new relationships, and make sure our services stay relevant and appropriate to our local communities and funders.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Growing from offering their initial <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/neighbour/" target="_blank">neighbour mediation</a> service in Eastbourne and Wealden, Mediation Plus now offer intergenerational, <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/workplace/" target="_blank">workplace</a>, <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/commercial/" target="_blank">commercial</a>, and <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/carehome/" target="_blank">health and social care</a> mediation. Established in 2003, the Time2Talk intergenerational mediation service has helped hundreds of young people and their families living in Eastbourne, Wealden and Lewes over the last 12 years and, with the renewed funding support announced last week, secured the future of the service for another three years.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/time2talk/" target="_blank">Time2Talk</a> Service Manager Joan Eades commented “We are delighted that Children in Need have agreed to extend their support for our service once again. With so many other local services for young people being cut or under threat, having the knowledge that we will be able to keep operating until 2018 is fantastic news. Without their support there would be no service.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Central to the success of the charity over recent years has been becoming an <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/training/" target="_blank">accredited training provider</a> with Open College Network London, which has given the charity the opportunity to develop its successful in-house mediation training into a nationally recognised and accredited qualification. Apart from training its own <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/volunteer/" target="_blank">volunteer mediators</a>, Mediation Plus have delivered training courses for other mediation organisations, local agencies and community groups.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Their <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediation-training/" target="_blank">next training course</a> for new volunteer mediators starts on Saturday January 16th and runs each Saturday until February 13th. There are still a limited number of places available on the course, so if you are interested in helping Mediation Plus continue to deliver and grow their services by becoming a mediator, call Joan Eades now on 01323 442781 or <a href="mailto:training@mediation-plus.org.uk" target="_blank">email her</a> for an information pack.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaGxwr84gXiRK39wLSvI96oxCtqqvxA88-kohxiRhp2cBP-nTC4KKUY9VewKb7gHvwe8gVntjCvI1q9SuCAYkde3bZcv7DB8LFtEbnXKUFUvzq-UUirV8wwt56HTeiJPQ_yc5FIP_eulgd/s1600/Mediation-Plus-workplace-mediators.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaGxwr84gXiRK39wLSvI96oxCtqqvxA88-kohxiRhp2cBP-nTC4KKUY9VewKb7gHvwe8gVntjCvI1q9SuCAYkde3bZcv7DB8LFtEbnXKUFUvzq-UUirV8wwt56HTeiJPQ_yc5FIP_eulgd/s1600/Mediation-Plus-workplace-mediators.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />Supported by funding from the Big Lottery Awards4All programme, a group of the services <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediators.html" target="_blank">mediators</a> have just successfully completed their <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/training.html" target="_blank">specialist training</a> designed to enable them to help businesses and organisations of all kinds and sizes across the area. <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediation-services.html" target="_blank">Mediation</a> avoids the need for employers to go through lengthy and expensive grievance procedures and concentrates on building practical working relationships that can help people and the organisation going forward.<br />
<br />Service and Development Manager Clive Gross said "We spend a huge percentage of our lives in one kind of working environment or another. Most people would like work related conflicts resolved but sometimes they do not know how to, or they are unable to work through how to make the changes happen. Workplace mediation can resolve conflict quickly and in a safe environment. It is a completely confidential process which encourages people to talk openly and empowers those involved to own issues affecting them and avoids decisions being imposed."<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/workplace-mediation.html" target="_blank">Workplace mediation</a> is now being widely used by businesses and organisations worldwide and can be equally effective in helping charitable and public sector organisations resolve disputes as well as commercial businesses. For the employer, workplace mediation can help to quickly restore healthy and positive working relationships, focus people on the future not the past and can take place at any time to try and resolve a workplace relationship issue.<br />
<br />Clive Gross added "This new service is a key part of our long-term aim of making <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediation-services.html" target="_blank">mediation</a> accessible to resolve all kinds of conflicts - not just the <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/neighbour-mediation.html" target="_blank">neighbour</a> and <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/time2talk-mediation.html" target="_blank">intergenerational</a> dispute services we are well known for. As a <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/about-mediation-plus.html" target="_blank">locally based charity</a>, we are able to offer an affordable service to smaller local organisations as well as those larger employers who may already be aware of the benefits of mediation. By using <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a>, they would also be helping us to sustain our community mediation service for those local residents who need it."<br />
<br />As part of the launch of their new service, Mediation Plus has secured a limited amount of funding to offer local charities or community groups in Eastbourne or Wealden a free dispute and conflict resolution service to help them deal with issues between staff, volunteers or trustees that may be affecting their ability to operate or deliver their services to beneficiaries. To qualify for the funded service, you must be a registered charity or constituted community group with an annual turnover of under £100,000 and referrals are subject to continued availability of funds.<br />

its work on the <a href="http://www.quickentrust.com/index.php/component/content/article/27-about-us/100.html" target="_blank">Kabbudu Development Project</a>, Uganda in 2000 after a chance

to support <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDsM23NU4lY" target="_blank">Enoch Kagoda</a>, Executive Director of the project to come to the UK and

director of the project and also within his community. After a week shadowing
the Mediation Plus <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/management.html" target="_blank">management team</a>, where he was able to gain more knowledge on

Plus Training Manager Joan Eades said “We are delighted that we have been able
to help develop and promote mediation in this exciting new way and that the
skills we teach our volunteer mediators here are now being used to such good
effect as far away as Uganda. The success of our training has been evident in
the professional and confident way that our mediators provide our services

<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The "SQP" - or "Simple Quality Protects" - awards were made
for demonstrating that <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/about-mediation-plus.html" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a> achieved a wide range of quality standards

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span></span><div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Service Manager Clive Gross said "Having a locally devised and
run quality assurance mark specifically aimed at smaller charitable
organisations that allows them to independently demonstrate the quality of their
services without the prohibitive cost and administrational burdens of others
such as ISO or Investors in People is a real boost for services like ours.
Service users, local agencies and funders all quite rightly want to be sure that
the voluntary sector organisations they work with have high professional
standards, and SQP helps us to offer them that reassurance."</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
</span></span><div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">While the SQP mark was specifically aimed at the <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/time2talk-mediation.html" target="_blank">Time2Talk</a>
service for young people and their families, which is currently funded by BBC
Children in Need, the accreditation process also helped to ensure that the other
<a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediation-services.html" target="_blank">mediation services</a> being offered by Mediation Plus were also up to the mark. </span></span></div>
<div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Chair of <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/trustees.html" target="_blank">Trustees</a> Barbara Molog added "While we were confident
we have always provided high quality services to our communities, going through
this process with SPARK made us think through everything we do again
and refresh our systems and procedures. We now have everything in one place so
that we can better maintain our standards of service in the future, and will
fully involve our Trustees, staff team and volunteers in ensuring we
do."</span></span></div>

</span></span><div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The SQP Awards round off a successful year for Mediation Plus,
with Barbara herself having already won the Wealden District Council "Trustee of
the Year" award a few months ago and the organizations' recent AGM welcoming two
new Trustees onto their Board. Barbara added "<span>As with all small Charitable Organisations, there is a
constant need to keep a tight reign on expenditure as well as trying to maintain
and grow the services and activities we offer, and it is thanks to all the team
in our Hailsham office and the dedication of over 50 volunteer mediators in the
community that we have managed to achieve this for another year."</span></span></span></div>

across Eastbourne, Wealden and Lewes and is made up of a mix of <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediators.html" target="_blank">mediators</a> and

<a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/training.html" target="_blank">mediation training</a> to local communities. We now want to bring in some new

£30,000 to support the four services, who together provide domestic,
intergenerational and family mediation services across East Sussex, West Sussex
and Brighton & Hove. The will help to ensure the continued provision
of voluntary dispute resolution to residents and communities across the
county.<br /> <br />Clive Gross, <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a> Service Manager said: "This
funding is vital to help preserve our work with our local Neighbourhood Policing
Teams in Eastbourne and Wealden, providing them with a valuable
early-intervention service that can prevent disputes escalating and ending in
serious incidents. Over 600 community mediation referrals are serviced every
year across Sussex. Mediation can help to assist in the prevention of crime and
reduce the levels of crime and antisocial behavior as well as addressing the
fear of crime. Police officers are also offered suitable training on how to make
appropriate referrals to mediation and how to encourage parties to take part,
prior to any intervention."<br /> <br />"By working together as the Sussex
Mediation Alliance, we can offer community based mediation and conflict
resolution services to individuals, organisations and agencies across both
counties to a high and consistent standard of services in terms of quality and
working practices.</span></span></span></div>

"I am delighted with the initial response to the Fund. The sheer number of
applications received reflects the huge number of local organisations and
community groups who are committed to keeping Sussex safe.

showed a year of continued progress in delivering mediation services across the
area – including the <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/time2talk-mediation.html" target="_blank">Time 2 Talk service</a> for young people and their families –

activities while keeping a very tight reign on expenditure. Our success in
renewing the funding of our Time2Talk service with BBC Children in Need has
provided a key platform on which to develop that service over the next three
years, while support from Wealden District Council, Eastbourne Borough Council,

following cuts to legal aid funding to a wide variety of civil legal actions
that came into effect in April.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Although pleased that <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediation-services.html" target="_blank">mediation</a> is becoming more widely recognised as an
effective way to resolve conflict, the Hailsham based service - which offers
mediation for neighbour, family, intergenerational and workplace disputes - is
concerned that government agencies are seeing mediation as a cheap alternative
to legal action and have not informed the public how the process really
works.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD1MBCcY4S8JX-g_Cygc4UMtwTm-f4v2vvvzTAzBu_VvViQWbARFkLPbaeZQNqs_INbRGXp22vcvuPXp5_yYFXW9cRlmEPUv81TplAnPYTZz8Xxn9wVPVk6zqB85E0fycWYkq6w37NBEcb/s1600/Clive+Gross.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD1MBCcY4S8JX-g_Cygc4UMtwTm-f4v2vvvzTAzBu_VvViQWbARFkLPbaeZQNqs_INbRGXp22vcvuPXp5_yYFXW9cRlmEPUv81TplAnPYTZz8Xxn9wVPVk6zqB85E0fycWYkq6w37NBEcb/s200/Clive+Gross.jpg" title="" width="166" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mediation Plus Service Manager Clive Gross commented "Mediation is about
helping people to find their own solutions and is a voluntary process, while
going to court is adversarial with an imposed solution at the end. Our service
is not about taking sides or deciding who may be right or wrong. From the
enquiries we are receiving, many people clearly do not understand this. They are
looking for something to be enforced and are often not in the right state of
mind to enter into mediation."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To help people better understand how <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/family-mediation.html" target="_blank">family mediation</a> works, the service has
recently <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/training.html" target="_blank">trained</a> a group of its existing <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/volunteer.html" target="_blank">volunteer mediators</a> to be able to talk
people through the process and allow them to assess whether mediation is right
for them. Supported with funding from the Affinity Sutton Community Fund, eight
volunteers have just completed an OCN accredited <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/family-mediation.html" target="_blank">family mediation</a> course and are
available to have an initial informal and confidential discussion with anyone
wanting to explore the idea.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Clive Gross added "Helping people to really understand the power of mediation
in different circumstances is a very important part of what we do, so we hope
that giving our volunteers this extra knowledge will help more local people
understand and access our service. While family mediation is not free, as a
charitable organisation we are able to keep costs much lower that for-profit
mediation organisations, and helps to support our community mediation work
across Eastbourne and Wealden."</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Also celebrating joining the service in a new capacity was experienced mediator Izzy Halton, who has just passed her PTTLS course with support from East Sussex County Council’s Skills Share Bursary Fund and becomes one of Mediation Plus’s group of in-house trainers.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mediation Plus also has a few places left on their first community mediation training course starting in Willingdon Trees next month, aimed at training people from local communities to help tackle disputes in their area. over twelve years of supporting the establishment of community mediation across
Eastbourne and Wealden, <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a> Chair of <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/trustees.html" target="_blank">Trustees</a>, John Gallop, stood
down at the charity’s AGM this week (October 29th) having seen the
service through a very challenging period of change.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">John
used his last annual report to the meeting to highlight how the organisation has
survived funding cuts and a financial deficit and was now looking forward to
further positive developments over the next few years. John told the
meeting:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">“Over
the past two years my report has highlighted the adverse effects that the
economic recession has had upon both our community and the charitable sector and
our sources of funding remain just as hard to attract. Clearly we are not out of
the woods yet and <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a> is still operating under difficult
circumstances but, despite these difficulties, the service has survived and is
already developing new strategies to assist in ensuring that this situation
continues.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">John
was instrumental in helping to set up the original pilot local mediation project
in Hailsham in 1999, and has been Chair of Trustees for Mediation Plus since it
was <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/about-mediation-plus.html" target="_blank">formed in 2006</a> by the merger of Eastbourne Community and Wealden Independent
Mediation Services.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Explaining
how he became involved, John said “My interest in mediation grew from my work at
the time in pollution control at Wealden District Council. We were dealing with
many complaints and neighbour disputes which we recognised could be better
resolved by getting people talking to each other. Some people find it more
difficult to talk openly if the Council is involved. So with the help of a
government grant and the assistance of several other bodies, including the local
Police, Social Services and the CAB, we set up an independent mediation
service.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">The
meeting saw the election of a new Board of six Trustees to guide the service
over the next year as it continues to develop new ways of delivering mediation
and conflict resolution services in the area. The charity has just been
successful in a bid to run its first pilot outreach Community Mediation <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/training.html" target="_blank">Skills Training</a> course, where local residents from a deprived area will be trained to
help mediate disputes in their local community.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">John
concluded “I should like to extend my thanks and gratitude, on behalf of my
fellow Trustees, to all of the volunteer mediators, without whom there would be
no service. I have witnessed <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a> go from strength to strength. With
the arrival of a number of excellent new Trustees this year, and in the
knowledge that we have such wonderful staff at the helm, I am satisfied that the
service will remain in good hands.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;"><a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a>, the community
mediation service for Eastbourne and Wealden, is concerned that Government plans
announced last week to relax planning permission requirements for property
extensions may trigger a wave of disputes among local
residents.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;"></span></span> </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;">The service – which has been
providing independent and impartial community mediation <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/about-mediation-plus.html" target="_blank">since 2006</a> – deals with
an average of 120 cases each year. Among the most common causes of <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/neighbour-mediation.html" target="_blank">disputes</a>
between home owners are parking, boundaries and extensions such as
conservatories and garages. The plans announced last week would allow extensions
of up to 6 meters – double the current limit – to be built without local
planning consent.</span></span></div>

small developments like conservatories and garages, it does at least provide a
mechanism for genuine concerns about the impact of these works to be properly
considered. </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><span lang="EN" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;">Any extension larger than
the current three meter rule may have significant implications for the occupiers
of the adjoining properties in terms of outlook and privacy. Doubling the
threshold seems to suggest that planners should only get involved when the
damage is potentially already done.”</span></span></div>

come to us early before issues escalate. Unfortunately, once a building is up it
is usually too late and arguments can even turn violent. We hope the very short
public consultation process being scheduled for these proposals will allow the
Government to reflect fully on their implications.”</span></span></div>

on the first anniversary of the summer 2011 ‘riots’, the report looks at ways
communities can be empowered to tackle these issues for themselves, as other
community safety services face several years of spending reductions. The
reports’ author <a href="http://www.demos.co.uk/people/benrogers" target="_blank">Ben Rogers</a> outlines the four key features that mark this ‘First
Aid’ approach out: <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">“First,
it is a skills-based approach, with the curriculum designed by professional
experts and regularly revised in light of developments in expert knowledge.
Second, the curriculum is simple, so that almost anyone can master it. Third,
despite its simplicity, it is aimed primarily not at children but adults.
Fourth, it appeals to both civic or humanitarian motives and to less selfless
ones – first aid skills can be helpful in saving strangers but also a family
member or friend, or even oneself. And it can enhance a CV and provide people
who are relatively unqualified, or not employed, with public
recognition.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Aside
from training members of the public, specific groups that could benefit from
this approach could include public service including park keepers and playground
supervisors, street wardens and housing estate managers, publicans and
shopkeepers, residents of social housing, young people in schools, ex-offenders,
and senior managers and executives in public and private sector
organisations.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Mediation
Plus Service Manager <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/management.html" target="_blank">Clive Gross</a> commented “This report highlights exactly the
approach our service and our colleagues across Sussex are currently developing.
We have already run a successful <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/peertopeer-mediation.html" target="_blank">Peer Mediation</a> training programme in local
primary schools, and are now developing workshops and courses for adults. As an
accredited <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/mediation-training.html" target="_blank">training provider</a> with over <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/about-mediation-plus.html" target="_blank">ten years experience</a> of working with
local communities, we are in a unique position to drive this approach
forward.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">As
the report highlights, finding funding to run effective programmes has proved a
challenge, even though costs can be under £100 per person for a workshop. It
also recommends developing skills within the community so training can be passed
on by lay trainers – a technique also being developed by Mediation
Plus.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Clive
Gross added “We are currently awaiting the outcome of a funding bid that would
allow us to run exactly the type of programme this report champions, with
participants trained to be able to pass on their skills within their
communities. We hope other local partners such as housing associations, local
authorities and crime reduction partnerships would also be interested in funding
programmes like this, as they could save significant amounts of time and money
by giving communities these invaluable skills.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

are very grateful for the donation and continued support from our local Police
service. At a time of cuts in public funding, contributions like this are even
more valuable in helping the service to survive and will go towards us keeping
our volunteer mediators active in the area."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">Superintendant Neil Honnor said, “Sussex Police fully
support schemes like Mediation Plus and this donation will hopefully go in some
small part in helping them to continue the excellent work across Wealden and
Eastbourne”.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;">The donation comes from the Police Property Act Fund,
made up of money received by the police from property confiscated by order of
court and then sold if an owner cannot be identified.</span>Mediation Plushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11031130247254394591noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8035313680412257083.post-88266772184796126412012-07-03T07:32:00.002-07:002012-07-03T09:00:30.491-07:00Double Celebration at Mediation Plus<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Last
Saturday marked a double celebration at <a href="http://www.mediation-plus.org.uk/" target="_blank">Mediation Plus</a>, as our latest intake of volunteer mediators and five new Trustees joined
the service. Following an appeal through the media, a range of local people put
themselves forward as potential Trustees and were interviewed by Mediation Plus
Chair, John Gallop.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
